new to the site and aquaponics and wanted to say hi

I have been looking to start a barrelponics system with the blue barrels. I found a local supply that had soap in them and was wondering if they will be ok to use for this? or should I look for "food safe" ones?

Welcome Poodie! Soap should be okay, as long as you get it all out. The good news is that you won't have to use soap to clean them.
