Hello all, just wanted to introduce myself to the community. I just recently decided to take the plunge and try my hand at aquaponics and discovered this site which seemed to be a great place to learn and share information so i joined in hopes of taking in as much information as possible and learning from experienced members. I've managed to get a small system built and running with only a few hiccups so far. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and I look forward to hearing from other members :)

Welcome! How long has your system been up and running?

I think most guys germinate using rock wool cubes. I direct seed almost everything I grow (lazy) but the are a few plants that just dont seem to do well with direct seed like spinach.

Thanks for the response, by the way i absolutely love the greenhouse you built. anyways its been up and running for just shy of a month i'd say. and ah oh yeah thats what I originally did was just put seeds directly into the growbed, i put in lettuce (which is growing good) jalapeno (one has sprouted and seems to be doing good) basil (which is doing great) cilantro (no results so far) and spinach (same as cilantro)

Thanks. Yeah, I would suggest the rock wool cubes. Dang spinach doesn't even germinate well in my garden. Then again I always wait too long to seed so maybe that has something to do with it.

If you do please post your results. I'm curious now.

As a newcomer to aquaponic I personally enjoy your set up. I have a fish tank about half the size of yours. Your set up automatically made the light bulb go off in my head.

I love growing spinach outside. Would love to attempt to grow some aquaponically. I just don't think the yield would satisfy me with the set up I'm planning.

With my set up.... I was thinking about using it as a natural insense garden. I think it would be fairly easy to maintain. I enjoy coming home from work at nights and smelling some of the candles that my wife would have lit up. It would me nice to stop buying those expensive Yankee candles lol.

It would also give me the practice I need before I adventure to bigger things.

I'll follow this thread and check out the progress you make. I'm excited to see what happens.

I germinate all my seeds in a wet paper towel then I enclose them in a sandwich bag and place it in a warm dark spot.... behind my PS3 lol. I would say that I have a high germination percentage with this method.
