Hello all, I recently put this unit together as part of a school project and thought I'd share. It is self sufficient. I just add food and water. I sweep the gravel once every 4-5 weeks, it takes ten minuets, and thats it. It has been up and running for 4-5 months now. The biggest problem is finding plants that will stay alive. Still experimenting with that. The intention was to grow usable herbs and produce only. I also wanted it to be attractive in my home so I used a little finesse. I think I have $40. in equipment, and $25. in fish. Most of the parts were modified from stuff laying around the house. Supplies: 15 gal fish tank garden fountain simple fountain pump 10 gal air pump plastic box turned in to a pump box (to protect fish and elevate pump to top 4" of tank) 5 lbs expanded clay pebbles modified old end table floor lamp with grow lamps installed timer heater thermometer sock and sponge (disposable particulate filters for inf and eff) aluminum pan as safety catch for possible overflow Fish: 3 Black skirt tetras 2 crystal blood fin tetras 1 dragon goby 1 banjo catfish 1 Chinese algae eater 1 sward fin tetra 1 beta Plants: Lucky Bamboo Sweet Basil Mint household spider plant
