I am finding this pretty helpful as I am just starting also. Even if you are not interested in doing an IBC system it still seems to have a great foundation for understanding how it works.

I found it quite helpful to read some of the "member's systems" to see what makes the most sense to me.
Have you read the IBCs of aquaponics yet?
Welcome
Gene

Do a lot of reading on this forum. Look at they types and sizes of systems. Read about the problems they have encountered and how they overcame them. Once you have an idea about what type and size of system you want go looking around for materials before you make your final decision. Be creative, people have used barrels, bathtubs, even refrigerators. Any second had materials you find, pay attention to what its made of and what it had in it. Pick the wrong fish tank and you could be poisoning your fish or yourself. Then you can decide on your system. Pick your fish based on your system temperature and size and whether or not you want to eat them. Feed them organic fish food from the start.
You will encounter problems. Experiment, but document everything. And finally ask questions before you start.

dont be afraid to read a lot.

what i think is fun on a friday night is getting a six pack and doing a youtube search of aquaponics and seeing all the videos of systems.

when you have questions.. dont be afraid to search for them on this forum because they have probably already been asked and answered 10,000 times

and after you have done a fair amount of self help, dont hesitate to ask the forum,
