I'm wanting to start my system with one IBC as my ft and the top portion as a gb. My question is, can I add maybe 2 blue barrels cut in half as gb's and function fine while only having the one IBC ft?

Sure. It is also better than just having the 1/3 of the IBC since you can a) grow more plants and b) stock a few more fish

You will need more fish to support the plants I don't know the numbers off the top but Google fish to water ratio and you can find what you'll need to know also have to be careful about over stocking your ft do the research and you shouldn't have any issues

I would suggest NOT googling fish to water ratios, because chances are you will get bad information, there's just so much misinformation out there....

Your plan sounds fine snowman... Go for it..
