Hello all,

My name is Manny. I am a Peace Corps Volunteer serving in the Philippines in the environmental sector, Coastal Resource Management. My main purpose here in the Philippines is to help the Filipino community restore their coral reefs, which means establishing marine sanctuaries. Establishing these sanctuaries would restrict the fisherfolks fishing grounds, which is their source of livelihood. When getting to know my surroundings, i noticed an aquaculture pond raising 5000+ tilapia. This got my noggin' ticking away, alternative livelihood project? Maybe...

First thing is first i need to erect a system to show my counterpart and other supervisors. I work with the Local Government Unit, so i dont want to dive head first and mess up. Could be disastrous, plus i am here for 2 years so i have time haha

Small personal aquaponic setup for me and my host family, then for the whole municipality.

Looking forward to chatting with you all! :-)

Hey!

Thanks for the welcome. Sorry that i have not been active and havent replied. I was evacuated when the super typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan hit the Philippines, but nevertheless I am back in action. During my evacuation period I found a few great reads on aquaponics. I read the IBC of aquaponics and it was quite helpful. I have been back in the Philippines since the 5th of January, and have started a home project to demonstrate aquaponics to my municipality. I will post the current status of were it stands tomorrow along with a few questions. Cant wait to get this ball rolling and have feedback from everyone.

Hope this message finds everyone in good spirits! :)

-Manny

Glad to here you are okay after the storm and have started a system. I am no expert but would be glad to help you out with information on the successes and failures I have had with my system.

Thanks MarkZ!

Ya my province was really badly hit, northern Panay Island was hit pretty hard. Peace Corps had to send 37 volunteers back to states so they could figure out there next step. Basically needed us out of their hair. haha
