Just making one more step towards starting my Aquaponics system by joining this forum. I bought the IBC, waiting for the polytunnel to arrive, so expect to be up and running in two months. Still undecided if I'm building a constantly flooded or flood and drain, advice is welcome on that one. Welcome to the madness!! I'm envious of your IBC-- I'm starting a three barrel system myself. I've been putting the pieces together... and I think I've got enough to begin the cycle... barrels, cut, pvc pipe & fittings... rack to hold it, test kit, pump, cuttings, seed... just need my media. Pea gravel is going for $17.50 a ton, and I figure one ton will do my four grow beds nicely. I have a couple of goldies and a pleco to begin, once I'm cycling. The goal is tilapia, but I want to feed us, eventually... so, I'm thinking a pond. My goal is flood and drain, I don't have enough ooomph or water to go constant flood. Still looking for IBC's. So- how's your weather? And... what is poly tunnel? |

Hi and welcome, The difference between flood and drain using a siphon or constant flood is a bell. You could experiment with both. Constant flood is the easiest to set up |

Hi Herbsinger42, thanks for your reply and welcome. As you can see, I wasn't back on the forum for 6 months!! My system is now up and running, and fully cycled. I decided to cycle with 10 goldfish and it took 8 weeks to the day to get virtually zero ammonia. Weather has been much warmer then expected for the UK in spring, between 0 and 15 degrees C mostly since January. I think it helped the bacteria to establish well. A Polytunnel is a hoop house, I bought it for about $150 equivalent. How is your system going? I guess you're cycled by now, did you get the Tilapia yet? skeggly, thanks for your reply too.
