Hello All,
I've been lurking here for a while getting ideas I need for my first shot at building an Aquaponics system, lots of good info here. One thing I haven't been able to find is info on where in Perth I might get some Scoria for my grow beds, does anyone here now of an outlet North of the city?

Cheers.

Welcome HC!

Glad to have you aboard. Im not from perth so Im not the best to help, hopefully someone chimes in. I would imagine most good soil buisnesses would have the products you are after. BYAP have a sand/soil place right next door.

Thanks Charlie,
I've seen lots of Pea gravel around the local Nurseries near Ellenbrook but not any Scoria yet, can't wait to watch the missus planting in the Scoria :funny1:

Hi ArBe,
great place to live, been here since 2000, just wish I'd bought a larger block.

Welcome HC. You wont find scoria in Perth I'm pretty sure, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it is an eastern states product .

I had a feeling that was going to be the response I was going to get, I don't want to spend a fortune on expanded clay balls, I'll have to look at something else then.

Thanks for your input though.

Theres plenty of inexpensive media options out there. Try searching 'media' and I think you will find something that suits you.

If you want something cheap I would say blue metal or cracked gravel. Blue metal is cleaner and requires less washing I would think.

Nothing wrong with pea gravel or blue metal.

Thanks faye and arbe,
Pea gravel was what I was originally thinking of using but I sort of got stuck on the idea of scoria after finding out how porous it is, will the Pea gravel take longer to have bacteria attach themselves or will it just be a case of not as much bacteria by volume?

Thanks again for your comments.

I've been told BGC may have stock of scoria, I know a couple of people who work for Brikmakers so I might give them a call and see what they can find out for me.

Hiya HC, I do mixes of gravel and exp clay to keep the weight down and even out the cost, buying bulk exp clay can bring the cost down also. I'm doing a trial at the mo between clay and gravel, too early so far but I'm not expecting much of a difference if any judging by the members system threads.
Never seen scoria here either but would like some if I could get my hands on some...
Fancy the West missing out on something eh...
