Hello from Louisville KY! Have not started my project yet but am looking to see what has worked for others to avoid as many rookie mistakes as possible. Just a hobby that will pay dividends down the road I hope.

Welcome, download the free IBC of Aquaponics and have a look. There is a link at the top of the page.

I have viewed the video and others like it. I was just hoping that some who have followed the video like I am doing might have some tips on problems that invariably turn up in any kind of projects, or tricks that have improved on the process. One thing I do need to know is what kind of grow lights to use. Are the LED colors really better that the old school lights?

Hi Roger, welcome to the forum.

Ccbear was referring to a manual BYAP put together with a ton of different systems. It's free and will give you lots of information. The link is at the top of the page on the right or you can click here to go straight to the pdf -
http://ibcofaquaponics.com/files/IBCofAquaponics.pdf

It won't tell you what lighting to use, better to ask that in a thread.

So my favorite setup at the moment is CHIFT PIST (Constant Height in Fish Tank, Pump in Sump Tank) with a SLO (Solids Lifting Overflow) in the Fish Tank running Constant Flood (Pumping the water 24/7, no siphons needed just standpipes and media guards in the growbeds). The Fish Tank is the high spot with the growbeds one step down and then the sump tank (where the pump is located).

The more we know about your setup the easier it is to help you out.

Cheers
