Hello, very excited to add Aquaponics to our pastured poultry operation. We are thinking to start with tilapia and about 300 gallon tank, with perhaps two grow beds. We have a south facing patio that should work well, but will need to enclose and heat.

We are not much in the way of green thumbs so will need to learn how to start plants well and transfer to grow medium without contaminating with dirt.

We are also interested in making our own fish food - presume you can feed them probiotics as we do with our chicken.

Coco peat will become your friend! Contamination will never be an issue if you use worms in your beds. Just stocked mine with a few dozen [all I could catch] each.

I am sure you could extrude any number of recipes, but, baking would be where you loose the value of probiotics. I am not even sure fish need them, to be frank. Dehydrating at 125-140F might be the way to go. Again, this is all conjecture, as I have no fish at them moment and will pellet feed, supplemented by worms and meal worms I raise myself.

Just cleared 1/2 acre for poultry paddox, myself. I am unfortunately within city limits and can only have 10 pullets, but, should be plenty for eggs. What breeds do you raise?

howdy from another buckeye..
tilapia should be doable on an enclosed porch...as long as you can keep the temps up in the winter
as far as planting, if you bring seedlings in, be careful where you get them, you could bring bugs in with the plant (like aphids)
seeds do just fine in an ap system
