Hello,

I recently came across an article about Aquaponics and was fascinated.. So far I've find this forum and site in general to be *very* informative  Anyway I'm looking at putting together a small system and I was hoping to get a little advice on a few things.

First off I think I would probably just start with goldfish.. Would it be safe (health wise) to add fish that I might harvest without having to remove the goldfish and flush the water?

I think I would probably do a chift pist or a simple flood and drain.

How do people handle the availability of electricity with the grow beds outdoors? I've got a carport with electricity.. I was considering having my fish in a 50-80 gallon tub and having the growbed on the other side of the wall - where the water would be pumped to and returned from. The other option would be to install an outlet for the outside...

Also what would be considered the minimum depth for an efficient system? Or rather - if the best container I can find is of similar dimension to that of a large garbage can - does the additional depth provide for greater capacity - or would one be better off with a container half the height?

Thanks!

Welcome! Are you going to grow indoors in the winter in your car port?

I'm not 100% sure yet - I don't want to kill my fish every winter.. in theory I'd love to be able to grow veggies year round (using a green house of one form or another) but we do tend to have a few months in the winter than can be pretty nasty. I see you're in Maryland lax4ivan - have you had any luck in the colder months or are you growing indoor?

I'm indoor right now. I may go outdoor with a couple of 55 gallon drums but I'm not sure yet. I don't have the ability to put a green house up so I'm limited to time i can be outdoor. So i am leaning on the side of keeping everything indoor and building a low energy food producing machine. :) i may just set up a quick easy outdoor system so i can be outside as much as i can, hard choices ahead.... Ha.
