Hi
Ive just set up an ibc unit like the one off here.
The questions i have are-
I live in the Hunter valley NSW am i able to stock trout over winter and Barramundi through the summer months?
If so where can i get the trout from and how much longer should i wait to put the trout in?

When cycling with the fingerlings should i still use seasol or will the fish do the work?

The reason i would like to try the trout/barramundi is because i have a dam stocked with silver perch and would like something different that is faster growing.
I have read alot on this forum that this option is fine for Perth and i have checked our average temps against Perth and it is very similar.

Thanks

Hi and welcome.

Yes you can stock trout through the winter and they should be available April/May. And depending on your summer temps you should be able to stock Barra as well.

Not sure how far you are from Gerringong but Im sure RupertofOz will chime in and may be able to assist.

Good luck :thumbleft:

Whereabouts in the Hunter Valley...

Trout through winter shouldn't be a problem.... but Barra through summer would probably be marginal... unless everything fell into place... and/or you're prepared to heat going into summer... and autumn...

Thanks Charlie and rupertofoz.
I am located in singleton.
So I would most likely have to heat in the earlier and later months of the warm seasons?

Should I start a fish less cycle now until I am able to get trout fingerlings?
When and where will these be available?
I have called arcenciel at nundle but they have none until later this year.

Is there another fast growing fish I could grow in the warmer months.

Thanks for the replies

Yep, start your system cycling.... trout should be available about end of April...

Nothing grows faster than Barra.... if the temps are right.... next best are Jade Perch... but you still have the same kind of temperature constraints... and Jades are often not available until late December...

Silver Perch would probably be your best alround option... but they're a minimum 18 month grow out...
