I was feeling quite pleased with a red pawpaw that I had last season and then it started getting marks on the bark as if it had been damaged. It eventually got to the stage where the whole top was dead but because the bark was still looking healthy I didn't pull it out thinking it might shoot out.eventually new shoots did appear but then vanished like these

One night I went out with a torch and disovered that it was covered in sluggs, right up to the top.It was easy to bring them out during the day just flood the pot that it is growing in and they all come to the top then just flick them into the fish tank much to the delight of the fish.Acouple of nights later I checked and there were just as many there again.I have gradually got rid of the sluggs but the shoots keep vanishing then look what else I have noticed. There seems to be a good supply of them, every time I flood it I get more. You can see by the match head how small they are.

Sneaky little buggers, what about a film of petrolium gelly around the base of the tree.

Try coffee grounds - dry ones of course. I've seen it stop snails and slugs in normal garden areas - heap it around the base of the plant.

Copper. If you can find sheet copper it works best, I've heard, but copper coated electric wire should work. Especially since they are so small.
Wrap it around the trunk of the tree and make it so they have to crawl over it, they don't like to.

I have got some copper strip out of a starter motor winding, I will give that a go.

Nothing is cute that chews up my trees... I wonder what might eat 'em besides the fish?

You could try some Multiguard around the base

How about some diatomaceous earth? Works for soft bellies in other gardens.

Try a large saucer of stale beer, slugs go mad for it generally drowning themselves in drink. What a lovely way to die. I have used this many times with considerable success.
