Hi my husband and I would like to try our hand at a small scale Aquaponics set up this spring. So my questions are do I need a permit or something? where do I buy the fish stock? Anyone in Ontario that can help would be great thanks for your time!! |

Hi, I'm new here as well and we've just started constructing our first setup in our basement. No idea on a permit, I hope not! One nugget I can offer you is that there is an Ontario company selling tilapia fingerlings - http://w ww.noafisheries.ca. I like that their tilapia are both male and female instead of being flooded with male hormones to create an all male population. I believe there are also two companies located in Alberta and BC. We're starting out with goldfish as our tank is small (55 gallons). If this system goes well, we're looking at adding a sunroom/greenhouse on to the side of our house where we'll put in a tank large enough to grow tilapia. Hope that helps! |

Welcome SR, I'm on the other side of the continent but I did a search and came up with this http://www.puresprings.com/ and http://www.silvercreekponds.com/Contact_Us.html Probably have to talk to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to find out what laws and regulations apply as well and what is legal for you to stock. If your setup is to be indoors they might not even care (yeah right |

Thanks for the links! I contacted the ministry but have yet to hear back from them. I'm hoping to find a good source of feed as well. I want to raise my own worms and crickets but I've been told I need to also feed commercial feed. My only issue with that is I don't want to feed my fish corn or soya and such. Does anyone have any ideal about quality feed free of those ingredients? |
