What's the common wisdom? Should I start a micro system first or are the little systems too sensitive to beginner mistakes?

Smaller is more temperamental. Bigger is easier. That does not mean stocking 100 fish, but it does mean having a larger volume of water.

One use a film of water, one uses more... I recommend starting with gravel growbeds, then expand from there. With gravel you get a nice place for nitrificaton bacteria to colonize, and a place to put plants. They also do a fantastic job cleaning solids out of your system. Later, after you gain some experience, then do all the NFT channels and such.
