Greetings brothers and sisters! This is a fascinating area of 'home farming' that I have been interested in for several years but have just this day ,September 18 2012 ,finally finished a moderately sized operation and introduced 77 Blue Tilapia fingerlings. I was given two 700 gallon tanks some time ago and buried them side by side with one elevated slightly. I have, floating in the raised tank, insulation foam boards with holes drilled in them and have some basil, lettuce, spinach, and marigolds started. I have a 400 gal per hour pump in the fish tank moving nitrate saturated 'poop' water into the veggie tank over a red rock lava bed I built to help promote bios .The return is a gravity feed system through an intermediary smaller tank with a homemade filter ( using a new floor sanding pad) and emptying back into the fish tank. It SEEMS like it will work....I got the babies this morning and though I haven't seemed to lose any, they won't eat as of yet. My first question for the forum is how long before they settle down and get hungry? I would love to hook up with anyone in this area who is into this. Though raising fish is an ancient method ,yet it is almost unknown in this modern age where we are so utterly dependent on the grid and the grocery store. My name is Jim. Drop me a line on here!
