I was introduced to Aquaponics at a very young age. I used to read a magazine called Mother Earth News and they always ran articles on self sufficiency. Well had an article on Aquaponics one issue and I was intrigued by the thought of it. It was a homemade geodesic dome with a pond inside that was stocked with Tilapia. Well I became possessed by the thought so I tried to convince my parents that this was something that I could do. Well of coursed they thought that I was nuts. They did eventually compromise and let me build a pond which I did raise tropical fish in. I did become a fish fanatic and when I went to college I studied marine biology which at the time was the only thing that was close to my interests. I still felt that the world could be fed by Aquaculture of some sort and there was many like minded students there as well. Well one day the head of the marine biology dept came to our class a little drunk and told us what a bunch of idiots we were and that we would never be able to feed the world and that there was no jobs in our field. Well the class was shocked and crushed but it was sort of wake up call. He was right though because at the time there wasn't any jobs in the field. The next semester everyone scattered. A school in Florida was offering offering a brand new program and degree in Aquaculture so I pulled up stakes and headed south. Of course when I got there the program hadn't even started and the money was running out so I switched to oceanographic engineering and gave up hopes of of getting a degree in Aquaculture. Now that I'm an old and my kids are grown guess what i'm going to be doing? It's good see I've found some like minded people again. Hi!

I'm a Floridian as well. I've been interested in fish my whole life as well but have only in the last year heard of aquaponics. Welcome, loved your story.
