Post subject:  Greetings from South Africa

I knew there was something fishy about this forum. I registered last week and have been spending hours reading old threads. Unbelievable how much info and great ideas are to be found here.

Hi everyone out there. I am here in South Africa about 15kms from Marikana where all the striking and shooting on the mines has been going on. Both sad and annoying.

I must tell you all that I am a member of a number of forums (not aquaculture related) and this is by far the most friendly and helpful bunch of people I have come across. Great work all you fishermen and women.

At the moment I don’t have a system and will be starting a 10,000lt tank with 8 beds sometime in October. At the same time I want to experiment with a small low cost system that can be given to poor people in the remote rural areas. No electricity, no running water etc in their villages. Also no money so it must be a real cheapie and very simple to own and operate.

I will probably go with tilapia I the warm months and switch to trout in the winter. Temps +35 C in the summer and down to -1C at night in the winter with daytime temps going up to 26C. Will use some form of heating for those cold nights.

Well that’s about it for now I’ve still got a lot of reading to do.

Forgot about the avatar and will put that up soon.

Hello! You may have seen this already, but this guy's at least sort of out in your neck of the woods: http://synaptoman.wordpress.com/category/aquaponics/

I haven't read much of his aquaponics stuff, but I used his plans for a clay oven a couple years ago, and he was very helpful.

Thanks all.

Yes I know Kevin (Synaptoman) - I have bought his manual on AP 2 or 3 years ago. He has put in some great systems since then. I beleive that he has sold his place in Knysna and moved closer to Cape Town.
