Hi, My name is Jarrad. I was introduced to Aquaponics by my brother, who has a single IBC system. Originally I started out with one IBC system which we setup under the kitchen window. We got the fish and water pump from a concrete fish pond in our yard that had to go to make way for a proposed housed extension. That system works really well. We used expanded clay and Goldfish in it. The Goldfish are very efficient at keeping their tank clean. Our Second system came about because we were originally given two IBCs. I bought another pump for that system, but it was probably a bit to small. This time we decided to try a different grow medium. We used blue metal from our local garden centre. We bought Rainbow Trout from Golden Ponds. Even though the pump was a bit small, this system has gone well and the Trout have grown really fast. The third system isn't really a separate system. It is an expansion of the second system. We got given another seven IBCs. So I decided to connect four more IBCs to the second system and use one big pump to run the whole system. I also bought an air pump which delivers air to a stone in each tank. I have ten Rainbow Trout in the first tank, twenty two Silver Perch fingerlings in the second, another ten Rainbow Trout in the third and ten Yabbies in the fourth. The fifth tank contains the pump and currently doesn't have any fish in it. Hi Jarrad - now that I've found your thread, welcome to the forum. I'm a little further north along the hills from you - looks like a very neat setup you have - nice work. |
