Hello, I'm the Damsel. My husband, Dread, has been getting very frustrated with the experience of paying for me to pour gallons and gallons of water into the porous, white sands of the NC Sandhills only to see my garden plants wither and perish. Having heard of Aquaponics he checked out the idea and got me enthusiastic about the concept. He loves to eat fish, I love to grow vegetables. He likes to tinker with stuff, I like to study ecosystems. We both want to be more independent from fluctuating grocery costs and the town we live in (we are right in town on a corner lot), doesn't permit the chickens we'd hoped to raise. We're looking to start with an IBC as per "The IBC's of Aquaponics" and are in the planning and sourcing stage at the moment. If the first experiment goes well we're prepared to go much bigger -- we'd sort of have to since we've got 4 kids ranging from a young adult still at home while he saves up money from his first job to get a house of his own down to a 6yo. Add in the weekly gaming group and random college-age kids who might land here on any given day and we go through a LOT of food. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all. I'll probably do most of the posting, but Dread will probably be on to ask questions about the technical stuff as we build. |

Welcome guys, you two sound like quite a team. I must confess that watching the interactions of the micro environment is, for me, the most interesting thing. Choose your plants to give you the best mass of veges to feed such a crowd. You will do well. |
