G'day everyone, Hi there just thought I'd say g'day I recently signed up as I work away on a FIFO roster and my wife is already a member (Bekinoz) so that I can see how our system is going whilst I'm away, I'd like to say thanks to everyone that has helped us on our aquaponics journey so far. Also I'm curious to know if any one has had any success breeding long arm shrimp in their system, pond or aquarium? Andy |

In computing, "first in first out" is a recognised way of handling a stack, so scotty435 wasn't far off. |

Hi all, Scotty435 jessy is right it does stand for Fly In Fly Out although most jobs I've been on the general opinion is it stands for Fit In or F... Off  Had a look at your Yabby hunting adventures Charlie pretty impressed with the Marron do you have Marron growing in your system as I'm interested in growing Euastacus armatus the Murray river fresh water spiny crayfish they can grow to 30 cm and 2 and a half kilo's. Thanks! Yea I have some marron... not sure how many, maybe 8 or so. Ahhh, the Murray cray, good choice. Slow growing from what Ive heard, something like 8-9 years to reach breeding maturity. But apparently super tasty. |

Cheers ccBear I just started a new job 11 days on 3 days off I fly out Monday it's alot better than the old 4 and 1 roster that I was on but 3 days isn't very long at home. Charlie how do you go with the Marron are they in with the fish or are they separated? Are the the same as keeping yabbies as the last few yabbies I had in my ponds liked eat each other and destroy everything probably why their called cherax destructor |

Pro's and Con's. Yabbies.. Pro's - temperature resilient. - rarely contract infection/disease. - poor climbers (compared to marron). - good/easy breeders. - fast growing. - although omnivore's, will eat almost anything on offer. - fine in poor conditions/water quality. - cheap, easy to find/catch, redily available. Con's - Destructive. - Fast movers/ stealthy fish catchers, eaters. - Eat each other. - Dirty. - Instinctual burrowers (not good on hard bottom tanks. - Acidic water (Low PH <7) softens exoskeleton and inhibits respiration. Marron Pro's - Slow movers/not as alert as yabbies, poor fish catchers. - Taste better than yabbies - Not burrowers - Not destructive - Less likely to eat each other Con's - Need top quality water - Also prefer alkaline for same reasons as above. - Crafty climbers/migraters. - Slow growers - harder to come by/ expensive. - growth rate stops at 4ppt salinity. - difficult to breed. This is just my observations over the last 15 odd years but I still have many tests and experiments to run. I prefer Marron because they taste better and co-habitate with fish better. But this favouritism may also be due to the fact I have an obundance of yabbies.... whenever I want. And they are little buggers to keep from eating each other and your fish. Hope this helps. |
