A place to discuss aquaponics

Greetings from Canada's north , I am a avid gardener and have enjoyed recently creating several home made hydroponics systems which I grew amazing fruits and veggies outdoors in Yellowknife NT , home of the Ice road truckers. I have now relocated further north beyond the tree line to Iqaluit.

I have a 20x27 foot space with 9 foot ceilings heated that I plan to dedicate to aquaponics.

I expect several challenges as supplies here are very limited and everything is flown in short of ships that deliver in late summer when the ice breaks up.

I hope this forum will be a wealth of knowledge and suggestions as I go along in this quest for what will possibly be the worlds most northern aquaponics system.

look for ponds in your area and ask how they stock

No ponds here being stocked aquaculture does not exist here at all,, I was thinking since indoors 100% of time to look at talapia and redclaws , I only want fish I can breed as I have a very narrow window I can acquire fish here , and shipping is a outrageous cost.

Any other fish suggestions apriciated , I have started to gather ibc totes which thankfully here are free and plentiful, substrate now the next question as buying and shipping hydroton not cost effective.

Hey there Steve. I live in YK and travel around the north often. Getting fresh veggies in fly-in communities is tough. So growing you own is nice, but not cheap if you have to heat and light.

I currently run an small indoor basement system during the winter and an outdoor system during the summer. Right now its just goldfish, but I'm thinking about heating the water in my basement and adding talipia next fall. I thought about growing Arctic charr, but they take forever to grow and doubt they will be as good as the wild variety.
