I’m new onboard and looking forward to being part of the discussions. Been researching AP for the starter system I’ll build this summer (it can’t come soon enough). Anyone who’s interested in IBC systems, be sure to download "The IBC of Aquaponics.” An informative PDF loaded with plenty of IBC tote system designs. Here’s the link: http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/component/content/article/180.html See you guys around... |

Thanks for the welcome Faye, Charlie. I’m working to narrow down the system design. You know how challenging that can be. Following the advice of seasoned growers, I need to start with a small IBC system design that’s easily expandable. I need to find the right (flexible) design for what I want: goldfish or koi tank at low stocking density; one pump in sump; media grow bed with worms; DWC bed; duckweed tank; zip towers. The system will be in a greenhouse structure in Zone 7 (Virginia, USA), which means temps range from below freezing to hot as hell. The goal is to get my hands-on AP experience on this system, which is why I want a hybrid system with the worm/duckweed elements and room for experimenting and pushing the limits of the system. Considering all of this, do any particular system layouts come to mind? Thanks much for the input, if you can... peace. |

Yo jT... you really are right down the road. Not much AP action in our east coast region, I’ve found. That makes VA and NC mighty close neighbors by AP gardening standards. Actually, I’m finishing two years in Hawaii right now and will be heading back east next month. That’s when the AP fun begins, in a climate much different from where I studied AP, here in Hawaii. This place couldn’t be any more perfect for growing. Do you have recent photos of your GH setup? |

Christine... download the FREE IBC aquaponics manual here... http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/Travi ... onics1.pdf Most system are based on a single pump in the sump tank.... what we call "CHIFT PIST"... constant height in fish tank, pump in sump tank.... This was rebranded later as "CHOP" by Murray Hullan et al... The PDF features over a hundred member IBC systems... and has interactive links.... If you can't find some inspiration there... you must be pretty hard to please.... |

Welcome Christine! I am here in PA outside Gettysburg and work in Columbia MD. I have a little system beside the garage ATM in a cold frame slash greenhouse that is doing alright, and will do better as we warm up. |

Rupert, thanks for the IBC link. That AP manual is exceptionally well done and I’m referring to it often these days as I make my splash in the AP grow world. Working in publication design for ages, I have a good idea of what went into putting that thing together. Kudos to the folks who organized the content and put it out there for all to share. ... Dave, are there many home AP systems in your area? Have you any idea? What type of fish do you use in chilly PA? Slide me a recent photo of your set-up when you have a moment. Thanks. |
