I saw an aquaponics system on tv years ago and thought 'that looks like my nursery'. I have been growing plants in top and bottom trays for 15 years. A while ago I decided to convert part of my system to aquaponics and I am planning to start next autumn with a small batch of trout. Can someone tell me how shallow the water can be for trout and explain to me how water depth affects the fish? At present the lower trays are only 150mm deep. I may hav top make deeper trays? |

I'm taking it as your growing trays are 150mm deep right.... yeah, they'll work... but most people prefer the extra depth and flexability that something 300mm gives... Trout would definitely not like to be in a 150mm deep container...  Personally... I wouldn't go anything less than 600mm depth for a fish tank... and deeper if you're going to try trout... A shallow tank warms much quicker... and that's not what you want with trout... |

Can I add to this Rupe by saying that I have a trout on a 300mm deep tank--- BUT---- it is cooled, filtered, cared for and he is by himself. Probably not a happy trout in regards to space to swim, but he has beautiful clean water and at a crisp temp of 12deg. I wouldnt recommend it in a normal AP. heres a pic.

Oh bugger! you have finally caught me out Faye.... Im in H devision, long more. (is that how you spell it?) He's fine, we care for him, I promise. Nicole wouldnt have it any other way! Besides, its my daughter Alliyah's baby. Only the best for her.

May I add this tank is about 2.5 metres long. I wouldnt recommend a 300mm x 300mm FT, or anything close. |

Thanks for the advice everyone. Sorry it took me so long to get back but I am new to this. My 150mm deep trays are 3m long but only hold about 300lt of water full. I was worried about the depth and the water overheating and I thought it might be difficult to keep a small volumne of water stable, So I am looking to get an IBC so I can have 1000lt. I am going to use the 150mm deep trays as grow trays. I know that's not an ideal depth either but I think I'll get by. |

They'll be OK for grow trays... just beware that large root mass veges.. like tomatoes... can root bind shallow trays a lot quicker... |

update on previous post is my indoor tank was a total failure....just so you know. |
