Post subject:  gardening without weeding sounds great

Hi all,

been reading quite a lot of the posts here and thought i would say hi and show my microponics system.
I have been soil gardening for a few years now and had some good crops but i thought i would give this aquaponics a go on a very smal scale just to see how we go.
I all ready had a half barrel with gold fish in it ( 5 small ones) so just needed to put in a grow bed. So far i have one chilli plant and 3 cucumber ( not looking to healthy). I need to go and get some iron and seasol. I do have some seeweed drying in the workshop at the moment but wont be ready for a week or so. i also need to get a water testing kit to see whats going on.

its not letting me upload pics, so need to read how to do it.

thanks

Hi,
Looking forward to your pics.
I had to upload the pics to my google picasa/photos album and then copy the link from there. It seems you can only add pics if they have a web address ? Can anyone confirm this ?

No not at all.... In fact the best bet is if you can upload the picture directly to the fourm.. When making a post you will see a box under where you are typing the text that says "upload attachment". You can browse your computer and "add the files". They do have to be 800 x 600 or smaller to upload them though..

Yup, only way I do it anyway... Windows Live Photo Gallery is what I use and it works well.

Referring to your heading... I agree... and one of the things I love about AP is that even when you do find a weed its not as annoying because you know its helping the system as well! After all, a weed is only a plant that you dont want in your garden... and all plants help your system get rid of nitrates from the water so its kind of a win win! And the best thing is that they are so easy to pull out too

Thanks for the help on the photos, I had another go at uploading them but it just freezes and then nothing happens. I also tried to load a pic for my Avatar but it told me file must be bigger than 0.0 Mb. i will just have to bring the pics into work and try on there computer. ( im on an android based platform and the ones at work are windows based)

Thanks

Edit: tried it at work and it worked as explained first time. Thanks

Cute little system, does the barrel leak much ?

Hi SuperVeg,

when the water level gets closer to the top there is a slight leak from some of the joints but not enough to cause a concern. I was going to use a liner in the barrel but thought it would distract from the way it looked. After cleaning i just soaked the barrel for a few days to allow the wood to swell.

I love the look, wonder how it would go if the growbeds were all barrels too.
I wonder how long the barrels would last before the timber rotted too much..

Love it! Was thinking of doing that for a patio system SuperVeg... Love the look of barrels... have to admit tho, I never considered how long they would last as they are made to hold liquid for such long periods of time... would it actually rot?

I'm sure it would rot eventually, especially with the bio slime and solids build up.
As opposed to when it is filled with wine, which is inherently antibacterial/antifungal for the most part...
But that doesnt mean it wont last for at least a couple of years...
