We are a family of 4 living in South Perth. Our house is surrounded with limestone and there is very little garden beds / soil areas. The whole property is also completely out of the Western setting sun. Plus it is in a good suburb and where we intend to have the AP setup is in 3/4 view from the street. Bearing in mind that aesthetics is critical, we are considering having 2 of the Backyard Aquaponic's balcony systems. Riunning side by side in part of the alfresco. ![]() This system comes with just 150L of Expanded clay each. I don't know what size fish tank is in there. My concern is, having spent so much $$$$, capacity may be highly limited. We do want to grow trout and barramundi and yabbies. As well as herbs and some vegies. We do not expect to be self sufficient in these, but do want to be able to go to this garden and grab some fresh produce. I would like to have a dozen fish per 6 months for consumption. So, is this system too small and unproductive? Are there other flaws with this system? |

Hi GS, I think a dozen fish every 6 month might be pushing this system. I don't think you should stock more than 8 fishes. I know you mention that you don't expect to be self sufficient, but for a family of four, I think you need to have a bigger system even for the occassional fresh veges. Speak to the people at BYAP. Personally I would as a minimum recommend you consider the courtyard system. Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk |

Yep, if you really want fish production then you need to look at a bigger system. |
