I am new to aquaponics, and I am chasing the basics, currently I have 15x200mm barra soon to be 10 barra and 6 marron in my tank that has about 900ltrs of water and 4 x 100ltr grow beds. The basics I am after is what should be the : Nitrite level? Ammonia level? Nitrogen level? is my fish and tank size ratio to my grow beds ok? and why salt is added and if so how much and will it effect my marron? Any information would be greatly taken on board. And yes I know it is hot here and the Marron may die but I have got a ring main off the outlet of the tank pump going back to the tank and sprays water, allowing the air to cool it, currently it is at 26deg, if it gets too hot I will buy a glass tank and put them inside with the aircon on. also I have added more plants in the empty grow bed

Ideally ammonia and nitrite should be 0, although 0.25 would be ok too. Nitrate can almost be anything. I wouldn't worry about fish tank to growbed ratio. I would be concerned with fish to growbed volume ratio and I would say that with 25 fish (I don't think the yabbies will count for much) will be pushing the limits with only 400 litres of filtration. |

hey South Hedland, Onslow here South Hedland wrote: And yes I know it is hot here and the Marron may die if it gets too hot I will buy a glass tank and put them inside with the aircon on. Have a hunt around for Red Claw, would be better suited to the temps up there. As for the parameters, " Ideal " is 0,0,0 on everything, but that isn't always the case. So monitor, and report if in doubt. You'll get the hang of it, it is easy. |

Earlier postings look good. Hows it going with the system in 2012. I'm hoping to move up there to PH soon. So interested in doing a new system. Is it easy to get the blue drums and main 1m3 tank? Thanks. |
