You almost got it in the above... but you left of the last "w"...

You may need to pre-filter the water before the pipes... as any solids will adhere to the roots of the plants...

And replace the clear tubing... it'll just grow algae in the sunlight... and breakdown over time anyway...

how long will the clear last ?
you dont think the shadecloth layers will be sufficient for a filter ?

Sorry... missed the shadecloth bit... in the blue "drum" up the top??....

Should work OK... but might need regular cleaning so that it doesn't start to "putrify"... become anaerobic...

ok my bio filter :
its that blue bucket at the top that is glued to the lid of the clear container , i cut out about a 3 inch hole that connects them up . It then has a piece of 15 mm PVC pipe sitting on the base of the blue bucket for added support.
For the bacteria to grow i then placed a piece of shadecloth inside and wrapped the 3 packets of noodle in like a package that sits on the base of bucket ontop of the PVC support bar.
Ontop of that i got another piece of shadcloth doubled over ,put it in the bucket and wrapped up what i could of the pump outlet pipe (the clear pipe ) .
HOPEFULLY the doubled over shadecloth should catch the solids for me . i will just have to change it now and again . seems to be working though
i am thinking of getting a couple of marron in the clear container just to get anything the filter doesnt. i have heard that marron dont like running water though, will they still be ok up there ? that water up there does run pretty fast and has got alot of oxygen in it .... what do you recon ? will they live ?

Might be a problem with heat in summer... and maybe a bit cramped.... yabbies might be better.. space wise... but could still get too hot....

You can use all sorts of alternate prefilters.

Cotton sheet or towel.
Rolls of cotton wool (prob not the balls)
Big sponge. You can get big pond pump sponges at bunnings
Kitchen scoarers

Best would be aquarium filter wool. Make sure you don't get ripped off though. I got a 2x1 m roll fairly cheap. Fancy aquarium place will charge trough the nose.

thats a good idea , i might get some of that filter wool for it . how much does it cost ?

but any filter i add is still going to putrify because its out of the grow beds. Unlike everyones flood and drain grow beds where the worms they put in eat it ? is that correct ?

and I thought I was quite thorough with my youtube explanation....

I think I paid $12 for my roll of filter wool. Could probably fill 2 or 3 pillow cases with the amount I got. My quoted size of 2x1m was just a guess.
