Here is the "Fountain with Flowers in it".
To the right of the pump you can see where water is pumped through the gravel to a ring pipe that goes around the outer perimeter of the growbed. the fountain is there to put oxygen into the water.

File comment: This system holds about 10 litres,
and just a couple of goldfish.

I assume that if the plants were left long enough they would probably suffer in the root department, Thing is , as soon as their big enough for a sandwich, they're gone!
One of the drawbacks of locating a system in the BBQ area

Here is a pic of what goes on under the gravel,
Spray heads have since been removed due to blockages.
And a larger pump has been put in,
but the rest is the same.

Hiya Dicko
Are you also a friend of Bill W?
What a cute little system! It can only get bigger.
I only discovered AP 3 days ago and am passionate already. I am presently "hunting and gathering" and today purchased two of those big blue plastic drums which I will cut in half lengthwise to use as growbeds. I hope they didn't contain anything too toxic - smells like ammonia or chlorine, but some of them smelt worse. I could only fit 2 in the back of my Laser hatch so will have to do a few trips to get several more. Each one should give me nearly a metre of growing space.
Pity I didn't discover AP a bit earlier - I've just sold my home in the Perth Hills on 2.5 acres and am downsizing to a house on 550 sq metres near Freo. But I've worked out there's enough room and a workable area out the back for a 1000 litre system. How many growbeds (surface area) could a 1000 litre system support? Any thoughts anyone?

Hi GM - I prefer to cut them the other way

1000 litres will support 2000 litres of growbeds (constant flow only), and 100 fish - but it wont be the most stable of systems - around 1000 litres of beds, and around 40 fish makes it a lot easier to manage.

My 1000 litre system has 4 x 1/2 barrels, and supported 60 x 150gm trout for a week, while the big system was being modified. No ammonia or nitrite readings spiked.

Your limiting factor will be the method you use to irrigate the beds.

Gday Tezza,

Loose the "Ex", (I did!)

You'll ALWAYS be " Brother inlaw" to me.
(And a Bloody good one at that! :D)

How did you go with your green house? Up Yet?
Let me know when you need to move the fish out of the dam,
It's thirsty work, and you probably need a hand.

I picked out your thread with out too much trouble,
Not many AP'ers in Meredith.
Was wondering when you would find me 8)

Love to the family ,
