I already have redfin in my dam that were there before i bought the place. I cant see that catching a few and putting them in a tank can be any worse. I know that if you catch them in a river or lake you are not allowed to put them back, but they are already in the surounding rivers. You are not supposed to put goldfish in the waterways either, but you can keep them in a tank.

Buying them or transporting redfin in NSW might be a problem though!

Terry we should meet and have a chat, some of these govenment departments need to be looked at,redfin were and still are one of the most popular fish for anglers in victoria they are very hardy and will handle all climates, and i think they are one of the best freshwater table fish you can eat,i dont know what effect they have on native fish around these parts over brown and rainbow trout, they are all introduced species and you can bet they will start on them next, but there are to many trout anglers for it to happen .

terry, i was sure that it was only prohibited to release a caught redfin in NSW, last time i checked that didn't apply to victoria but no stocking permits (dams) would be issued here.

Steve, I'm not 100% sure about the release of redfin in Victoria. Just a feeling i have from somewhere. Do you know if there is an issue with having them in my tanks?

Actually.. Redfin seem to be about the only thing that isn't listed as "noxious" in Vic...

Here's the Noxious Aquatic Speices Policy and Permit info....

I didn't even know there were that many fish spicies  But the news is good for keeping Redfin.

I might try Redfin and Trout in separate tanks and see what does the best. I like the idea of smoking some trout, but i guess you can smoke Redfin too. For the record i know even less about smoking fish than do about growing them, but i guess i have pleanty of time to learn while they grow.

terry, i think if a fish is prescribed (noxious) species in the state then you cant even have a live specimen in an aquarium eg tilapia in victoria.

however something like redfin you could keep in an aquarium. i tend not to go down the track of "in a ap tank" as people previous dealings with DPI was "which box does it fit into" and with AP the closest box they could find was aquaculture versus hobby tank...........

for me if its legal to keep in my aquarium then i'll take it as legal in my AP ;)

thre trick is going to be transporting them. o2 is no problem, but if they're a big size ammonia will build up very quickly and stress will be a killer..........

Jim, I have a big weekend this weekend building the new greenhouse which arrives tomorrow. Beats the hell out of socks for Fathers Day :D

Tanks arrived today so just the growbeds and some plumbing to find now. The black plastic tubs you have in your system are they just the $10 jobs from bunnings? Do i need to find food grade plastic tubs? I plan to run grow beds inside and outside the green house so i though that i could use 55ltr tubs and i could move them outside in the summer once the weather warms up.

Any thoughts?

Perhaps i can wander over next week or weekend? How do i get in touch to make a time?

Terry
