Get some sodium thiosulfate from swimming pool shops, they are supposed to sell it to dechlorinate swimming pools after treatment with high levels.
You'll find what you should need here

And you're fast, have fun and take time to cycle it right and it'll will an AP madness going on ;-)

What a most informative thread - thanks so much for the link.

This one thing still has me wondering.
RE: small fish number in large tank.
If an optimum ratio (I’ll just use imaginative figures for the exercise) 1kg of fish to 100lt GB to 50lt fish tank. If we replaced the FT with a 500lt. Would the amount of ammonia be diluted (ten fold)? If so - if only 1/10th of the ammonia is being delivered to the GB will this reduce the growth capacity of bacteria/plants?
Could it be that when the system is cycling the bacteria needs are so small, they are not affected by the difference in quantities? :dontknow:

it would be diluted yes, but its still the same amount of amonia for the total system and as you will be recirculating the WHOLE volume of water it will be converted to the good stuff and the plants wil take it up, it just takes time to stabilise

having said that i dont have a system myself ( but Ohh how i want to get it finiished ) so i might be wrong

Cheers

Don’t see how that can work – with these figures it would take 10 cycles to get all the water through the GB (and that assuming that the same water never gets pumped more than one, which is impossible) – compared to the GB in the smaller system getting a high concentration each time. Anyway I guess I can live without knowing that for a while – the main consensus so far is that it is the right thing for beginners to do.

Hey I’m in the next suburb to you – I bought a complete roll of 4m wide plastic (heaps cheaper way to buy it) if you need/want a smaller length – happy to cut some off & divide the price.
