How about some diatomaceous earth? Works for soft bellies in other gardens.

Wouldn't the water effect the diatomaceous earth,it kills weevils by sucking the moisture out of them.

Try a large saucer of stale beer, slugs go mad for it generally drowning themselves in drink. What a lovely way to die. I have used this many times with considerable success.

I will have to give it a next time, they eventually beat me,the pawpaw gave up and died because they chewed every shoot off as it came through.Fortunately I have another very healthy one setting fruit.I know what to look for next time.I wonder how the fish are going to like sluggs and snails marinated in beer?

The beer works, but if you have a lot of slugs like me, it will only keep them at bay, not eradicate them. I have to empty them out and re fill once a week.

Beer definitely works. We just bought a silicone muffin tray, cut it up so that you only have the muffin bit, filled them with beer and placed them all around the garden. They can't seem to resist, but like DrLuke said, we have to clean them out and refill them once a week.
