Hello,

I am a new member here. The reason that I haven't contributed is that I haven't had the money to get started with aquaponics until now.

I recently entered a business pitch competition to start an aquaponics business. In order to get started with my business, I need to learn more about what else is stopping more people from getting started with aquaponics.

The idea is to create aquaponic systems that people can rent for the cost or less than the cost of organic produce at the store. These units will be nearly 100% automated and wifi connected to ensure that they are providing a constantly healthy environment for the fish and growing the plant quickly.

I created a short survey if you are interested in helping make aquaponics easier to get into and automated.

With your help, I know that I can help this industry grow and provide food for thousands of more people as well as reduce the huge carbon footprint of traditional farming.

Just my two bobs worth, but IMO if you want to get aquaponics out to as many people as possible and on a cost effective basis, then I wouldn't worry about wi-fi connection, and definitely forget about automation. The probes require regular calibration and quality dosing systems aren't cheap. It's much easier and cheaper to do weekly, or twice weekly pH & Amm checks with a simple reagent test kit.

I would make the systems as basic and as cheap as possible, ie: IBC systems, and provide the customer with a short, simple operation manual and an API Master test kit... The KISS principle.

The two main points of resistance I encounter from people considering getting into aquaponics are: (1). The initial cost... and (2). The perception that aquaponics is too technical.

Take a look at this style AP. http://iavs.info/what-iavs-is/ It's simple, can be somewhat compact. Is designed to be run on a timer which means very little use of electricity and minimal water loss. The system can be designed into one piece of equipment. Imagine a rectangular swimming pool type structure with the fish tank on the end or running along the entire length of one side. I can imagine a few ways to set up an iAVs system, and they all would work the same and be productive.
