My husband and I are working on our first system in our backyard and we're definitely learning a lot along the way. Right now our current issue is that our hydroton keeps shifting around as the water floods and drains, resulting in peaks and valleys. I'm attaching some pictures. Any advice? We are thinking of adding some heavier media on top of the hydroton to prevent floating. Our grow bed consists of two halves of a blue barrel.

As for fish, we have been offered some koi but we may try to procure some tilapia instead. We have a 100-gallon tank for the fish.

Excited to find this group!

Thanks.

Hi Artpen, welcome to the forum :wave1:

Hydroton will sometimes float and others have had similar problems even to where the plants move around or fall over (myself included). Lower your water level max when the flooding occurs and once you get it right the media will stop moving.

On the pictures, they need to be resized to 800 x 600 if you're having troubles posting them. Here's a tutorial Tallman did that might help - http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=21754

Cheers

Yeah what Scotty said... Even with heavier media, you don't want the water to come all the way to the surface, to prevent algae growth in the growbed
