Australia started to change to metric early 70's was done in stages. School was a pain had to learn both and convert. ( no calculators or google back then  )

They have been teaching metric in the schools here in the US for quite awhile now, but I don't think they ever plan on actually switching over to it. I know the metric system, what I meant by getting used to it is thinking in it rather than knowing it, like I know a meter is a bit longer than a yard, but I can visualize how far 100 yards is but not how far 100 meters is. Same with gallons -> liters, etc.

I think if we actually would change over it wouldn't take long to get used to it, but I doubt we will see that soon.

You realise of course... that if you switched to metres and litres... you'd have to start driving on the other side of the road as well ...

And start spelling words like meter, liter, color etc... differently...

Mid 60's wasn't it Ron? With the introduction of the dollar over the silly pound and pence? 1966 I think.

Yeah......had a teacher in the '60s who said .......its the fault of the Brits.......they should have sent gunboats up the Seine (towards Paris) to stop the French Revolution and therefore stop ALL this :? metric madness

Yeah, the one good thing about the imperial system, was that fractions rule. Nobody seems to be able to handle fractions anymore... disappointing really.

Was my recollection

C1 is correct.
We went to decimal currency 14/Feb/1966.

Not sure of the dates Aussie's moved from Imperial to Metric, but it was a few years after.
I don't remember doing Metric @ primary school ( grade 6 in 1969) but remember doing it in High school, where all maths concerning fractions and/or decimals had to be also converted showing the method, had stupid things like 3.5cm + 4'' = x mm

I convert in my head litres/100klms to Klms/l because when i go to the servo with little money, I think i only need x K's of fuel now how many litres do I need.

Cheers
Ron

I'd assume currency was stage 1 of the entire stage conversion, but perhaps not.

I can't imagine having to work out dollars/pound for stuff, when it was always pound for pound, only years later to have to make it dollars/kilo... must have sent the fruiterers et al mad!
