Hi Faye
Can you give an indication of the growth in BYAP by country or by aussie state?
Im interested in the rate of growth of aquaponics
I think this forum indicates the interest/growth of aquaponics

Hi Aquam,
That's a bit tricky to break it down by where people have come from and what they are doing. For example a lot of people come here and look but don't post pictures or threads. Many more people are doing aquaponics than we know about. I gather that from their visit to the shop and they tell me they have made their own system or a friend of theirs has a set up that we have not heard of before. It is a growing past time hehehehe!! :flower: :flower: :flower:

Each time I pick up some Silver Perch fingerlings, Mike tells me that he has a constant trade from people coming in to get 25-50 "for their aquaponics systems".... nearly all from Sydney....

Yet virtually nobody from Sydney is active on the forum... it's kind of weird... coz I gave him at least 50+ business cards before Xmas... and he's handed them all out... but not a whisper or phone call.... :dontknow:

Thanks Faye and all
Sounds like it s a hard thing to judge

We can demonstrate (particularly for dry areas like Vic WA SA etc) what water efficiency benefits there are for the gardens and fish etc

It would help spread the message if we could say something about the growth.
Reading this forum I know there is a lot of people interested and it all makes such beautiful sense.
but when I mention it they people either have already searched and learnt or they look at me strange.
In Melbourne we have strict water restrictions and I was in Perth when the 47 degree temps hit. The garden is stuffed.
Aquaponics is the perfect solution for Melbournians and yet few know about it.
People read stuff/want to know about new trends
Can anyone think of a way we could measure/estimate the growth in aquaponics?
I know you've been on the TV but that was about aquaponics not a about a solution to gardening problems in Melbourne or self sustainability in returment. There is so much benefit.
sorry ive rambled on.

no you have a point there aquam.
I have no problems talking to my friends and mum about it, but when I talk to others even sellers in fish or pet shops they either are a little curious or look at me strange. I've thought about different ways of explaining it and talking about it. I've even thought about making my business cards so it demonstrates what it is all about with an invitation to visit this forum. Nothing seems different, it only depends on whether the people you're talking to are ready to listen about it. They probably are too traumatized or preoccupied with their own problems they haven't got enough space to take on a new hobby. Another point is that gardening has become too cut out of our daily life that it's too weird, out of fashion or that you're an oldtimer for wanting to grow your own veggies and fruit (no offense meant to anyone here).
I'm doing this coz I tend to dance the the beat of a different drummer but seriously, there has to be a real food crisis and people has to really think about what happens in the food industry and what they do to bring food from the commercial farms all the way to our plate, before they can even think of new/old concepts of aquaponics and the like.

I take in comfort knowing that hydroponics is now fully on their way (i.e. foddersheds) and coming up with brilliant ideas. They just need to realize that it would be cheaper to run fish instead of big bucks on nutrients, water and power.

I've also seen that people won't really take you seriously until you show them your system.
