Seems "Aquaponics" is rapidly moving toward mainstream acceptance.... Two mentions in the latest FisheNews newsletter... one of a significant grant approval.... Quote: AQUAPONICS FUNDING FOR YANKALILLA AREA SCHOOL Some of the $74,000 in funding provided to the Yankalilla Area School by the State Government will be used to develop an extensive aquaponics project. The students will build ponds in which fish will be grown, and the waste water from the aquaculture will be used in hydroponic herb cultivation. Water used in the aquaponics will be sourced from tanks provided under a Federal Government grant of $8,000. Source: Drew Evers in the Times Victor Harbour (29/5/2008). Quote: AQUAPONICS AT SUNSHINE COAST TAFE
Aquaculture students at Sunshine Coast TAFE are moving into aquaponics and learning about diversification and environmental care. The wastewater from the fish they grow is being used to water and feed crops of bok choy and lettuce. Sunshine Coast TAFE has several aquaculture programs at Nambour, and online study is also available. Source: Noosa News (10/6/2008). |

I have to tell you that students at Challenger TAFE in Murdoch WA are also learning about the benefits of aquaponics, especially if they happen to be in any of my classes. No student that I teach escapes without receiving a tour of my garden and aquaponic system as well as the powerpoint presentation. Students enrolled in "maintaining an aquatic environment" are also brought to the garden or BYAP shop in Jandakot as part of their studies. |

I have sent YANKALILLA AREA SCHOOL and email to see if they will share details about their system with me (I sent it in the capacity of a teacher, not as a moderator from BYAP)... if/when a dialog is set up I will suggest they come here... I would love some info as to how they will use AP in their curriculum. |
