OK... there IS a U Wisconsin in Steven Point, but the Conference in June reads like a scam. Quote: Early registration fee is $495/person, until May 15. Loike, OMyGawd!!! For only $595? AND A CHEF???Regular registration fee is $595/person, after May 15. Student registration fee is $225/person, must be full-time student and provide student ID. A credit option will be available - check back for more details. Conference Highlights: The latest in aquaponic technology, methods and applications will be presented. Experts in the aquaponics industry will share information about aquaponics and its varied uses that are feeding people around the world. Applications and uses including commercial, education, mission and integrated systems will be discussed. Issues such as food safety, fish feeds and regulations will be addressed. A Poster Contest will showcase student research in aquaponics. Prizes will be awarded. The Chef's Demo will feature local chefs who will demonstrate a variety of ways to prepare aquaponically-grown fish and vegetables and conference attendees will get to sample the culinary creations. Attendees will tour a 5,000 square foot aquaponic greenhouse. An evening Wisconsin-style picnic will provide a great opportunity for attendees to socialize while getting to sample some of Wisconsin's finest local products... cheese, brats (bratwurst) and beverages. The International Aquaponic Society, a UWSP Foundation organization dedicated to aquaponics research and education, will be launched and the first organizational meeting will take place at the conference. OK, I may have been hasty - the Uni DOES exist and it is offering course in AP... e.g. Quote: UW-Stevens Point’s Continuing Education program, Department of Biology and Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility have partnered with Nelson and Pade Inc. to offer a three-credit, full semester course, Introduction to Aquaponics. The course was developed jointly by Chris Hartleb, UW-Stevens Point professor of biology, and Rebecca Nelson and John Pade of Nelson and Pade, Inc., a Montello-based company specializing in aquaponics technology, systems and training. I'm fairly sure I've seen a couple of those names on here but buggered if I can recall with what level of acclamation they were mentioned. |

There are quite a few universities in the US... that are now running aquaponics workshops... and even short courses... and they're certainly legit... It's some of the "forum".. and "backyard" experts... that should be questioned... as to their "qualifications"... and experience... specially in terms of commercial aquaponics... rather than those associated with the universities... |

I still call scam - just because it is a university doesn't mean it is useful. University education requires, just like the rest of it, that you become enlightened before you understand. That oxymoron does not need me to prove it - every single one of you has had the opportunity to notice how you only finally get context (understanding) of a subject the YEAR AFTER YOU ARE REQUIRED TO PASS IT. $600 and near as I can tell not one of the presenters actually has an AP business. Mind you, it is late and I have only spent 25 minutes looking online... |

You're completely wrong there Journeyman... Nelson & Pade have been in business for years... and have a substantial aquaponics raft style greenhouse system.... They've been promoting aquaponics for ages... as well as running training courses in their on right... and consult widely on large projects... |

Nelson and Pade seem to be the major experts in aquaponics over there and are in partnership with the university. in other words, they are businessmen who work with scientists at the university to teach and promote aquaponics. I had a look at their website and they seem like (apart from all the spelling and grammar mistakes I kept finding) honest, hard-working and tough as nails kind of couple who have intensive knowledge of aquaponics. and I mean INTENSIVE from many years of on-hands doing it. they've been consulting with lots of big projects with a variety of people who are actually committed to run their own systems for the sake of a variety of important causes. So, if I had the means, I would definitely go over there and get involved just for this. |
