Seriously, I think VB summed it up nicely.... this is an open "community" forum, and that in itself is it greatest value IMHO...

The open exchange of information, dissection of ideas, experimentation, implementation of new ideas approachs etc.... not only for the benefit of any individual who may experiment and refine an idea into something better for themselves....

But for the Aquaponics community as a whole.... surely the "greater good", the furtherance of aquaponics into the wider community... the affect it may have on future mind sets of the general population, and the direct effect AP could have on those less fortunate than ourselves...

Greatly outweighs any individual alturism or ego...... that's the stated and unambiguous aim and intent of the forum and thankfully appears to be what has drawn most people here and made the forum what it is....

There are others who have felt differently and have departed and gone their own directions, usually for commercial reasons..... like most parasites, they've presented and represented themselves to their "hosts" as likeminded....

Having sowed their seed, suckered upon the collective knowledge that has nutured their "commercial" aspirations... they depart with out gratitude or second thoughts....

Some have even set up their own websites and/or forums.... and believe me .... their rules are far stricter than any here on this forum.... and the restrictions far greater....

But you see their true attitudes reflected in their secracy, total control, intolerance of dissenting views and total control of their "Knowledge" and claim to that which others may have or may contribute....

Anyone who wishes to leave is free to do so... for whatever reason, even if commercial...

And nobody is bound to offer any thanks to those whos knowledge and assistance may have helped further their own aims, ideals or ambitions....

Anybody who doesn't wish to participate in an open sharing community such as this forum, probably shouldn't join in the first place, and they don't have to in order to benefit from the knowledge here anyway... unlike other forums or sites that require you to register even to read the posts....

There are very few "free" things left in our desperate globalised incorporated world.... even these days such a basic as water....

Buggered if I'm going to let anyone lay claim to the air I breathe or my right to knowledge and self betterment.....

To contribute here and represent one's self as a likeminded member of an open community... only to depart and delete one's contributions... isn't a matter of "intellectual property"....

It's a selfish, ungraceful, gutless little DUMMY SPIT..... a sign of pathetic, immature self centredness....

So if the only arguement for having the edit button ... is to enable one to delete their contributions, deprive the wider community of knowledge and value.... to indulge one's self for the sake of pique and vengence....

I not only say BULLOCKS.... but maintain, that for that very reason your arguement falls flat on it's face...

As it in fact argues for exactly the opposite.... the maintenance of the removel of the edit button....

A perfect option would be say a 1 hour limit on editing of your posts, i am sure that there would be a mod for it somewhere.

I would really like the opportunity to re-phrase..

So for me .. an edit button is good.

If I got on the turps and say things I regret, I would love to be able to edit to get rid of embarrassment... and appologise to all and sundry.

If we aere looking for proof of Naughty and Nasty posts - lock it in! But how are you going to punish the naughty boys and girls.

If someone has a record of being offensive .. manipulation of posts via edit.. just tell them they are not contributing and ask them to go play elsewhere.

I am a member of a few other sites where policing got so bad I don't visit any-more. Too hard to post anything!

In fact one site I visit, used by porfessionals people, open to public to see all deates, has disintegrated to common use of high level swearing and bitching to the extent that I don't contribute or visit the site. I am actually shamed by it!

I think Edit button should be resumed and people who join my give a hand on heart affirmation that we work together to not swearand diss anyone.

Joel has worked his ass off ...

Lets honour their efforts! - Then they can return the edit button!

I think this is worth editing ...

lol....and i thought the spelling mistakes were on porpoise.

It's not the swearing or dissin people that's the problem or the reason the edit function was removed....

The original "delete" post function was removed because someone abused it and began deleting their posts...

This left the "edit" function... sadly another member (past) calculatingly and deliberately choice to "delete" all information in his posts by using the edit function and removing all content and replacing it with a "+".... leaving the post empty other than "+"...

Obviously this was a contemplated and deliberate act... as the system would not allow for deletion through a "button"... and wouldn't allow for all content to be removed from a post and then an empty post submitted....

It wasn't an accident.... it was pre-meditated, deliberate.... an act of purile bastardary......

Unforunately there is no way to replace the function that wouldn't leave the forum vunerable to a similar re-occurance.....

Use the preview function until you've got your post right... or draft it in Word and edit it, spellcheck it until you've got it right... then copy and paste it.....

Just surround any required quotes with ""... nest them just like a good programmer should if needed....

I do it all the time.... ... sure I used the edit button myself.... but really .... I can live without it.....

Could the forum live with it..... not if it had 10,000 empty posts... or 10,000 posts that read "+"

lol.... forgot to replace the "" ... with "{quote}" and "/{quote}" ... so it didn't "quote" them...

Where's that bloody edit button.....

Oh Dear, another forum member gone

Fat chance OB, I don't get offended easily.

The 1 was merely my comment on this whole thread.

We will just have to wait and see if some one has come up with a time limited edit function mod for this version of phpbb and see if Joel can get it functioning on this forum without it causing other problems.

Till then, some of us who sometimes forget to add all of our thoughts or pictures into one post will be doing extra posting and we will have to deal with spelling errors and delayed apologies happening in posts further down a thread. (in some forums you can't post twice in a row so I am thankfull that is not the case here.)

Luckily it seems that on this forum most people are pretty easy going and the debates are more like debates than flame wars. I only noticed one member that took their stuff away by editing. Sad thing was he had a pretty neat system. I wonder if he took it away because he thought he could make some money off some of the ideas he had started sharing or if it was due to some other reason.

Ahh well, still a good forum in any case.
