You will definately need aeration if you are transporting trout. They will be stressed and will consume 02 very quickly. Trout being a finicky species, will require extra love in those first few days to a week. Every year after trout start going out to their new homes we read of HSM's on this forum along the lines of "HELP! My trout are dying". Its up to you to ensure they are dealt with correctly and humanely.

*Stock correctly.
*Transport carefully.
*Acclimatise slowly.
*Heaps of air.
*Feed minimal in the first day or two.
*Watch temps like a mad person and adjust with ice blocks if temps go above 22 deg.

But most of all, enjoy and have fun. What a fantastic species of fish!

Temp is down to 21.5 this morning, it's amazing how fast it drops from nearly 25 last Monday. Another week of hopefully convinnient temps and I should be in the safe zone.
Charlie when you say "Acclimatise slowly" would you enlighten me what that means?
From 0.1% experience 25 years ago (3 goldfish in a glasbowl for a couple of days) I would appreciate guidance very much :dontknow:

I'd love to see 18.7 in my FT but FT sitting inside a small greenhouse seems to be not a good idea.
And in my mind there is already another IBC just outside................

14.2 this morning at 11 and trout doing cartwheels at feeding times. Silvers sulking and knitting jumpers. Seems like winter is finally here.
Gran my tanks and 3 beds are in a greenhouse (and 2 are outside) and the outside beds do a great job keeping the temps down.

By slowly I mean, dont just throw them in. The biggest killer when introducing new fingerlings is temp and PH shock. If you take your fingerlings home in an esky, introduce them slowly by sitting the esky next to your fish tank and exchange water over a period of an hour or so by removing a bucket of water from the esky and then add a bucket from your fish tank to the esky every 10 minutes.. and so on. Basically exchanging the water to equalise PH and temp.
SP are a bit more hardy and Ive thrown them straight in before but trout are delicate when young Ive found. I just think its better to be safe than sorry. It a real downer when you walk out to your system and there are floaters.

p.s. tank temp 19deg this morning and SP still feeding well. Ate a whole head of lettuce lol

Thanks Charlie, I would have attempted the way you described, I must be a natural then considering the not existence of experience :D
Great to know that I seem to be on the right track.

Marc d W - if I only had more space around the greenhouse, the idea makes a lot of sense.
By the looks of it I am on step 1 of the long AP ladder.
