Yeah im definately keen on getting Jades as another option to doing the Barra over the summer months. I know a few would like to try Murray Cod but I recon getting approval for that could be almost impossible.

It doesn't make any logical sense... that "Jades" might be approved... but Murray Cod not..

Because they would survive our water temps and possibly wreak havoc if they got into our rivers.

The Cod,
Probably afraid of another redfin.
All just a theory tho :)
You can get them here for fish tanks easy enough, generally around $10-15 each.

It dosent make any logical sense why we cant have Jades and can have Silver Perch. I can see why they wouldnt allow Cod as they grow to large sizes and breed easily without the need for a summer flood. This has already been proven when a population became established in a lake down near Albany. On the other hand Jades dont grow to a large size, wouldnt have any impact on native marron stocks and in any case would be unlikely to survive the cold of a SW winter.

Meanwhile, the aquarium trade continues to slide right under the radar... I've come to realize why things are happening as they are. Aquarium trade, HUGE, shops all around the state people keeping fish in their houses and in garden ponds all over the metro area, more pet shops opening up selling fish and aquarium supplies all over the place... Hmmmm, thats a really hard one to sort out.... Probably causing a lot of issues with releasing of fish into water ways around the state, but how do you suddenly control a large "out of control" industry.

Aquaponics :?: Ahh, small industry, only a few suppliers of larger quantities of fish and not so many people doing it? Lets get that under control.... See, look we're controlling fish around the state..... :)

Yeah but do your customers have to apply for a permit that may take weeks to be approved, just so the customer can take their fish home?

Apparently there already is a "safe fish" list for tropical aquarium species and I think this is how they get around it. I believe the "white list" is exactly the what the fisheries will use for the growing AP population. I personally feel that the fisheries dept is here for us and not against as many might first assume. Just my opinion.

The issue lies in the quantities sold, aquarium shops price their fish so high that most people would only buy 1 or 2 fish which if released into a public waterway would probably go unnoticed and cause no harm. Hatcheries on the other hand sell large volumes of fish at a cheap price which would make an illegal stocking of natural waters more likely.
The boom in aquaponics is new so until the last few years there hasnt been so much of a demand for fingerlings except for farm dam stocking. The current restrictions were set up to prevent certain species being introduced to dams that may go over the overflow and into the rivers. Things take time to change, especially when the govt is involvedl but i am pretty confident that given time the rules will change to allow a greater number of species in aquaponics systems.

it may not be happening yet but there already govt committies trying to reduce the no of fish species that we can keep or import.
Anyway if you want to accurately know how many people out there have fish in their backyard and what types and quantities for when you introduce a tax on them or permits. especially easy if the permits are free now.
seems a bit like gst when they made the retail owner the tax collector, reduced the tax free market(dodgy cash) very quickly.
but then i am acynical bastard
cheers byron
