you could try just catching them. I got 2 once in my old man's dam... they're just not so common.
are you planning them for an indoor aquarium? if not why do you want blue? they all go the same shade of red on the plate

Anyone know where to either wild catch (in or around Melb) or purchase blue yabbies? I was give directions to a few places in the north north west of Melb that supposedly used to have blue yabbies 10-15 years ago, but had no luck recently. Any info is greatly appreciated. Cheers, AJ |

Thanks for that link Rupert. I emailed with Neil and although his per yabby price is great ($2.20 sml, $5.50 lg), the shipping kills it for the 10 or so that I want for myself ($44). Anyone else able to help out sourcing them? Anyone maybe interested in a shared order? Cheers, Aaron. |

I just get yabbies. They tend to fight a little. So its not bad when you start with 80 and can only see 20 now. |

Already on that thanks KP. An aquarium in Geelong had a crazy asking price of $29 or $39 (can’t quite recall due to shock...) for a big one, I heard Mentone had them around $19 and that Coburg was doing small/medium ones for about $10. I guess the thing is I'd really like the challenge of sourcing and catching them myself and blue or not they still just Yabbies so the pricing is kind of prohibitive, not to mention the lack of challenge involved. Thanks for your help thus far and I'll just have to keep putting the bait traps out there and keep my fingers crossed. I know they are out there, but also fully aware that most likely those in the know will not publicly share their wild source, for obvious reasons. PM’s welcome Aaron. |

I bought 12 yabbies for $10 in Echuca, & now have baby ones & hoping to raise them. Saw small ones in an aquarium shop here in Geelong yesterday for $3 each, but not blue. |

Ive got a couple of bluish ones from a localish dam, they are very pretty in the aquarium, but they dont play nice

where abouts in Melbourne are you? My local fishing tackle shop sells yabbies (12 for $10)........most of them turn blue in my aqaurium....not bright blue but blue enough that they dont look brown lol....also read somewhere on the net if you feed them carrot they turn blue too.........just make sure you have LOTS of hiding places otherwise they will fight and you'll end up with none |

BK, I already have quite a few varying in colour from dark to light brown. Some even have a little blue on the claws. However, I do feed mainly carrot (as well as the odd chook pellets and other veggies) and none have become any bluer in the months I have had them. It really is the VERY blue form I'm trying to find not just the browns that can turn a little more blue. Well.... I've found them, but at the prices listed above! |
