With great interest from the residents of the Amana Living Retirement Village, we installed a neat entertainer system. The system has been positioned so that the residents can view the growth from inside the buildings. A path runs past the system, and allows residents to help maintain and harvest the produce, which is used in the preparation of their meals.

Hello Faye,
Sorry it's been so long coming , but here are some photos from Parry Hostel Lesmurdie of their afternoon tea to help celabrate the " opening" of our aquaponics setup. As you can see, our residents were very keen to get involved with feeding the trout and had plenty of questions re types of fish we could grow, veges etc.
This has been a real eye opener for us, and it's good to see the residents taking an active part in proceeding's out in the fresh air.
Many thanks for everyone's support at Backyard aquaponics from all staff and residents of Parry Hostel.

Amazement at how easily the plants grow without any soil.

Barramundi are a little shy but are watched closely by the curious onlookers.

Staff are happy with the results as well as the benefits that a system of this nature can provide for their residents.

At the Lesmurdie Hostel they wanted the system to be a little more aesthetic and transformed an Entertainer system by cladding it with limestone and linking it to other areas with pathways suitable for those using wheelcahirs as well as walking frames. The great benefits with raised growbeds is that residents don't have to bend and dig anymore, the garden is at a perfect working height.

What a fantastic idea getting them into retirement homes, great to see some management using progressive thinking. I hope if I ever end up in one of these villages that someone who is in charge thinks to do adopt such things.

I drive past Parry on the way home each night (only live a couple of km's away) so please pass on my details or shout out if there are ever any problems and they need some water tests or anything done. I would be more than happy to help them out.

Cheers,
Mike

This is a tremendous idea and it would be great to see more systems go into aged care facilities.

Mitchyb, how is this system going now, three years on?

Funny, We just sent off a quote to these guys yesterday to ship a system up to their Kalgoorlie branch... It's almost like you knew...

Do you know if they need a hand setting it up Joel, or even some local support. Im happy for you to pass my phone number onto them if they ever need any help.

Joel, maybe I have special powers . . .

Good on you, Charlie! (Now be a good chap and use your powers to put the 'is' in the correct place in the second sentence of my post, else I will sound like a Russian in perpetuity!)
