Post subject:  City Farm in Perth has an aquaponic system

Well what a busy couple of days it's been...

City farm in Perth has been planning a system for quite some time, but the guy who was planning the system ended up leaving and getting a job elsewhere. They had already bought a few of the bits and pieces for the system including the corrugated iron tanks and some pumps, but this was probably close to 6 months ago. Well things started to get urgent when they have announced that they will be presenting their aquaponic system during their harvest festival on the 8th of December..

So yesterday work began in earnest....

Faye and I weren't quite used to this style of system, no simple throw the stands in place. plop the growbeds on and fill it up.. There's a lot more work in this style of system, including the fact that they wanted one bed to be gravel instead of the standard hydroton we have been using lately..

So after a bit of preperation yesterday in the stand construction, today the work really began.. We arrived onsite this morning at about 9.00 and I've just got home and had a shower and it's 10.00, and the day was an absolute scorcher, close to 39 degrees from what I've heard.. The thermometer that we brought to put in the tank, busted because of the intense heat.

All in all a great experience and looking forward to see some results from the system. They have an organic farmers market here every Saturday, with over 500 people visiting each week, it will be great that people can see a system in such an accessible place.. Yet to come are some professional metal signs explaining how aquaponics works, I'll keep this thread updated with the progress and more pictures as time goes on..

Gees, you would think I'd know better when it's my own forum.. Please scroll down to the bottom of the page and work your way back up through the photos to see the progress.. :?

Nice progess shots Joel... and great to have a system in such a prominent place as well..... the word is certainly spreading over west.

One question..... is it just your "godlike" status that allows more than 3 photos in a single post.... or have things changed :D

City farm is certified organic and they want to have silver perch so that they can produce the fish feed on site, and look at getting certification for the system as well.. It will be interesting to follow the progress as they push for certification of the system..

Indeed, please ask them to keep us inform of their progress, including the hurdles they encounter as they go through the process.

It looks great EB... Were proud over here on the East coast... Do you ever get the feeling over here in neverland(east coast) that we are missing out on all the action? hehe

Apparrently Rabbit farmers can't get organic cetrification, because they cage their animals, which they have to do by law. Do the organic ppl fish tanks to be cages? It's harly free range ;-) and they might have serious complaints if stocking density is high, sorta battery hen style

Because I don't want to chip it before it gets framed and goes on display in the pool room. Lame excuse I know!
