It works and that's how 200 foot tall trees can draw water up to the top. You add salt or sugar. I don't think it could ever move a useful volume though.

In trees and the like (even humans) it still uses a pump, it just uses the Sodium-Potassium pump at the cellular level. As the cells pass NA+ up the organism (which uses energy) it then releases the NA+ (or Other ions or even salts) into the area it needs H2O it then uses osmotic pressure to draw water to where it is needed. This is basically how one part of our kidneys work.

I was going to say the heavier salt water running down the one tube was causing in essence a bit of a siphon effect. Now I doubt this would be useful long term for AP since it probably would cause things to get too salty.

I know of many ways to lift water without a pump but most of us are not willing to bucket water around our AP systems 24/7. Nor do most of us have the heavy duty structures that would be needed to lift grow beds or tanks full of water to let them drain.

A ram pump is able to pump water uphill using running water, like a creek, river or spring as it's power source.
