Just thought I might drop a line to plug my own business and bring some knowledge to those who may not know about it. Heaps of good quality timber is taken to landfill, chipped or burnt by tree loppers every year. If you are having substantial trees removed from your yard and have a use for the timber such as constructing GB stands, chook pens, and other landscaping you should consider this. Much of the timber can be milled to produce furniture grade timber if you are willing to store it for a couple of years while it dries. I have just purchased a portable circular blade mill to operate out of Perth and have contacts for other guys who offer the same service in the east so if anyone is interested please message me. I offer milling on an hourly or cubic metre rate for you to keep the timber in addition to offering a large log removal service at a rate cheaper than the tree loppers will remove it for if you have no use for the timber. I recall seeing a similar unit using a band saw, driven by a petrol motor, on rails, similar to this unit, about 25 years ago. Many were sold, but there may have been a problem as I saw very few after a couple of years. I commend your industry and hope that your business grows well, and you don't have to do too much price cutting. (Pun intended) Have fun, Tony |

Thanks for the wishes guys, I to hope it works out as I have invested quite a large amount of capital in it. Bandsaws are very popular in the US but not so here due to the density of our timber. That is not to say there are not portble bandsaw mills operating in Oz, they are popular for cutting high value timber such as burls as they have a smaller blade kerf so there is less timber turned into sawdust and more turned into high value slabs. |

Good luck with your Business, it really is a waste to make firewood or even worse land fill waste out of good saw timber just because it grows in the Burbs. I wish there was someone like you around Baton Rouge that didn't charge $1,500 per tree to cut down and haul off! I have some 50 year old pines that would make fine saw lumber but would also cut my house in half if they fell on it. Bill. |

Oh yeah, just a tip for business, Follow the storms. The storm chasers are making $millions$ over here! Imediately after a storm anyone with a bobcat and a dump truck or trailer were making $thousands per day. So an honest man shouldn't have any trouble at all!! Good luck! |

I just wanted to say hi Burnsy from someone who also frequents the Woodwork forum. On occasions I have cross posted references and pictures on the WW forum and visa-versa. I'm still trying to master my Alaskan and chainsaw sharpening techniques and am glad that the AP system kinda looks after itself these days giving me time to go and play with wood. I managed to salvage several logs from the local park after our storms here in Brisbane and I know the guys put in a big effort at The Gap to salvage timber that otherwise would of been wasted. So many hobbies, so little time. cheers Derek |

As part of my timber milling enterprise I will be selling timber that I have cut from time to time. I would prefer to keep a list of what is available with prices (very reasonable) and email this to interested people in Perth as the list is updated rather than posting one off for sale adverts. Anyone here who plays around with a bit of wwodwork and would like to be included on the email list please PM me your email address and real name. Here is a bit of a taste of what can be salvaged from your average suburban tree. These are GB benches that I am making up for school in conjunction with the students, they will be bolted to 350x350x500 reconsituted limestone blocks. These were cut from salvaged spotted gum. No need for any treatment so we get rid of the treated pine issue, they will however be given a coat of aquadeck so they keep their colour. There is more slavaged timber being used in the system layout so I will post a few more photos as I go. Nice looking timber mate. Seems a bit wasted under the grow bed  .Derek - if you ever want some timber in Brisi (I know you have an abundance at Roma), you can come and cut down a couple of trees at my place  .

Most things are worth looking at but it can be hard to tell untill you open up a log. Paperbark actually has really nice timber, I have a mallet I made out of a lump I cut from a stump in my yard. Call me on 0409 312 907 if you want me to have a look. Cheers, Mike |

will do they just bought the house & he's flying out for a couple weeks though , I'll chat him up about it when he gets back - I'd like to try working with paperbark chunks to see how it turns out |
