Post subject:  Pond structure out of limestone blocks..
Has anyone out there built a pond out of limestone blocks?? I am looking at building a pond 2600mm x 1900mm x 1400mm deep (900mm above ground) on a 100mm thick pad (with mesh impregnated) with 300 x 300 footing around the edge of the pad...to support the walls. Also looking at putting a viewing window in one side out of 38mm perspex... sloping to one corner for the pump pick up... total volume around 6400L..

Limestone block size 500 x 350 x 240
concrete pad MPA.... suggestions??
should i put in a stand pipe?

thought, questions, comment???

Standpipe underground would be neater - beware of the walls bowing out too, my drill rods moved about 1/2 an inch.

standpipe thru pad with the ability to remove it and cap off the fitting.. top of the standpipe hidden under an edge of the pond capping... 240mm thick walls, relatively short shouldn't have thought it would bow out... maybe put in a column in the mibble of the 2600 sides to give it a bit of strength... looking around for liners and bits... thought of fibreglassing it up... but i hate that messy itchy shit.... ony fibreglassers onboard??? lol

I'd line it with pondtite or similar - and I would definately put some steel reobar through the middle of the 2600 sides into the footings. You've got nearly a metre of water trying to push the sides out - or are the blocks the interlocking type?

Have you thought about making a concrete tank?
You wouldnt need any coatings or fibreglass.
Admixtures can be used to make concrete impervious to water.
If you like add up what you were planning on spending with blocks and see how viable it will be compared to conc.

Concrete all fine and well and i agree that it will solve a few things (liner etc) But then i will need to build formwork and build it in one pour.. unless i do a mini tilt-up.. I just think that whatever colour i paint it, it will still be concrete. about $700 in blocks, which is allowing for the walls of the pond AND building feature out of two sides. I think the asthetics will be nicer. I spoke to a customer today who has a limestone pond with walls around 200mm thick, his holds 10,000L and has a thin fibreglass liner laid up internally.. His longest side is longer than i plan and has had no problems in 8 years... so i figure an extra 40mm thick in blocks should help out. thinking about it I might make up an internal brace to sit under the top course of blocks.. 100 x 100 x 6 angle should do it...
