When I first joined this forum there was lots of talk about feeding Tilpia with Moringa.
Since then the interest seems to have waned.

I (think) Chappo succesfully fed his Tilapia (or at least supplemented) Moringa, but he has gone awol since January.

Has anyone else had any success with it?
I was wondering what form it should be fed to Tilapia, I have a friend here who has a lot of Tilapia, and they pay absolutely no interest in it, in leaf form, it smells quite strong, I wondered if it needs to be dried and powdered first.

Have spent some time looking into it, but can't get any definitive answers.

Would love to know if anyone has had success with it.

Anyone had any success with Moringa?

The tilapia didn't seem much interested in it. My ducks and chickens really don't pay attention to the leaves though the ducks will peal the bark off of the dead sticks from last years frost killed plants.

I think to make much of this plant one would probably need to dry the leaves and then powder them as an ingredient of home made fish feed perhaps in combination to rendered powdered worm and BSF larva meal.

So what about home rendering of maggots and BSF larvae?
Is it just a case of cooking them and draining off the fat?
Perhaps even the fat can be used as biodiesel.

I read about somewhere in China sun drying blowfly maggots and using them for fishfood, but sun drying would lose the fat content I guess.

Have spent consdierable time researching homemade fish food, but don't feel like I have learned a lot.
For a commercial system, the food represents a large proportion of the cost of the fish (obviously)
If one could replace, or even supplement that part, it becomes financially much more attractive.
Not to mention the waste reduction capabilites of BSF larvae.

Hi! John here. Even I have heard that moringa tree has multiple uses. You people have discussed a very important topic. It is one of the most valued ingredients in the cosmetic industry, especially because of the anti-aging properties. The oil is not only light, but it can spread easily onto the skin without making it sticky.

Some people in thailand feed moringa leaf to tilapia.

Thai people eat it's flower, leaf,seed and fruit.
One of the best herb, good for health.

I tried to feed my Tilapia Ma Room (Moringa) leaves (fresh from the plant) and they just left it floating, no interest at all.
Do you know how Thai people feed Tilapia with Ma Room?
They dry first and mix with something else?

I read somewhere. They eat fresh leaf of Maroom fall in the pond.
If you feed leaf you need to leave it for a while, maybe over night, then see whether the leaf is missing.

Have you tried morning glory leaf?(PakBoongผักบุ้ง) It's my fish's favorite food.
It's fast growing veg., easy to grow.
If you fish do not interest morning glory your fish may need trainig.

I have a lot of pak boong growing in the garden.
I just hope I still have some fish left to feed it to tomorrow

John612, I really don't think the fish care about cosmetics, or whether the oil would clog up their skin. Did you seriously join today just to post that?

It's actually a little known fact that Tilapia will manufacture and apply make-up during mating season.

Well I guess they have to... they can't turn the lights off...

But I don't think it's good idea if you don't have big commercial system.

You know CP? It's biggest food company in Thailand.
It's make a lot of money from animal food industry.
CP let farmer do contract farming with them. Farmer buy fingerling, food, drug from CP and CP buy back the animal. Some ex-cmployee of CP tell me that in their own CP farms they don't feed CP food but using green water or other natural food for fish.
The food cost is biggest portion of those farm(~90%) and farmer must use CP food. Of course CP get biggest piece of cake.

If you want to do commercial fish farm, produce you own food is good idea. But if just hobby don't bother do that. Just use natural food like duck weed, morning glory etc.

Yes my friend is (or was) involved with CP.
They get poor farmers to do all the work, and they get all the bonuses.

My long term intention was to try to do this (AP) commercially at some level, but we will see.
The system in Surin grew out the remaining Catfish, but my split from my ex was not amicable (they say you never get rid of a Thai GF, you just lose your place in the queue hehe)
I don't know how many she grew to selling/plate size or even if she sold any.

I must try to get round to getting some more Moringa (Ma room) - I have plenty of space to grow it now.

At lease you can sell MaRoom Ha Ha Ha!

Interest in something lead to interesting in something else, like I interesting in AP introduce me to RAS.
Now I think I should RAS first then make a separate hydroponics system. Move fish pooh to hydro manually.

I think doing AP by separate RAS & Hydroponics should be easier to control parameter both system.
