| Post subject: | Marinepure BIO MEDIA -insane surface area! |
HI all, So first up let me just say I am not affiliated with these guys in anyway, but I am looking to incorporate a biological filter in my future system. I will link the eBay auction I found for reference; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Marinepure-Bio-Media-1-litre-1-sphere-of-marine-pure-is-equal-to-1350-bio-balls-/391080342394?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item5b0e34737a however I am not sure how long it will be viewable, so here is a link to their website I located: http://www.thetechden.com.au/MarinePure_1_litre_Spheres_22_Spheres_p/900138-1-litre.htm. They are claiming some insane surface area from the product (in the order of one sphere of Marinepure equaling 1,350 spheres of bio ball (although they don't actually mention which bio balls this comparison is based on!)). Anyway, my question is has anyone else used this product previously? I am interested in it, but I would like to take advantage of someone else's experiences first, if I can My thanks in advance for any feedback or comments. -francis |

.. "If it sounds Too Good to be true..." Firstly, if they have a massive surface area, then they have lots of holes... SMALL holes , and thus I would wonder how long they remain open for.. and then - Don't believe everything you are told.. Quote: Primarily designed to provide deep anaerobic zones for de-nitrification in passive systems. So, if genuine, better suited to non AP usage.. ie.. where you want anaerobic De-Nitrification .. . |

I suspect it is designed to house both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and I would assume its primary use would be in marine aquariums, not really useful for aquaponics. Mind I have made a lot of assumptions. |

Don't really want much anaerobic denitrification in AP as you generally want the N to go to the plants, not the sky. This looks like its intended for Aquaria where lowering nitrates is handy as Sleepe says. You also have to bear in mind solids handling - how will ht media deal with solids? Will you need a 100um filter to be able to use the SSA of the media effectively? |
