I went to give our honey bees the last of the five gallon bucket of honey we bought from Ken Garrison last year, before we bought two hives from him. I went back an hour later and the bees don't seem to want the honey, but they are super active. Some landing on the snow and walking around like maybe they are thirsty. There are little puddles everywhere, so I think they're good

Buddy or one of the other dogs snagged a rabbit this morning. Buddy buried it in several places before he finally decided its current location suited him.

I hadn't thought about bees not being active during winter. Have you seen the new 'flow hive' system which has been invented in here in Aus?
I would like to try my hand at bee keeping & I think the flow system might have just made it a lot easier.

I agree, I thought they gathered all the honey during the warm seasons so they could hide away in their hives over winter.

This wasn't a bad Winter, not really, it's just that as I get older (I'm not Old) just getting older, I can't handle getting cold like I used to. In northern New Mexico the sun almost always shines, usually right after a storm. Which is why I guess this thread says bees active with 18 inches of snow but there's barely any snow. That Sunshine is our little reprieve from the bitterness of Winter. Normally we get a few nights when it drops below zero Fahrenheit, not this Winter. Colum, they do, but our weather is changing it seems. We just came off three years drought punctuated by one hailstorm that dumped four times our annual rainfall in two hours. When that water hit the parched earth, all hell broke loose.
